Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Entecavir + hepatitis B immune globulin (HBIG) is a combination therapy used primarily to prevent hepatitis B virus (HBV) recurrence in patients undergoing liver transplantation for HBV-related liver disease. Entecavir is a potent oral nucleoside analogue that inhibits the reverse transcriptase activity of HBV polymerase, blocking viral replication at multiple steps. Hepatitis B immune globulin is a human-derived antibody preparation that provides passive immunity by neutralizing circulating hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). The combination of these two agents has demonstrated high efficacy in maintaining viral suppression and preventing virological recurrence after transplantation, with improved survival outcomes compared to older protocols. This regimen is considered standard of care for post-transplant prophylaxis against HBV reinfection[1][2].
