Overview

This is a combination therapy involving the concurrent use of enteral nutrition (the delivery of nutrients directly into the gastrointestinal tract via a feeding tube) and a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), which is a class of drugs that suppress gastric acid production by irreversibly inhibiting the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme in stomach parietal cells. This combination is commonly used in hospitalized or critically ill patients who require nutritional support and are at risk for gastrointestinal complications such as stress ulcers or gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The addition of PPIs to enteral nutrition regimens helps reduce gastric acidity, thereby lowering the risk of acid-related mucosal injury and bleeding[1][3][4][5]. There are several PPIs available, including omeprazole, esomeprazole, lansoprazole, pantoprazole, rabeprazole, and dexlansoprazole[1][6][8]. The combination does not refer to a single branded product but rather to the co-administration strategy for clinical management.
