Overview

Enterocloster bolteae (formerly Clostridium bolteae) is a Gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium belonging to the Clostridia cluster XIVa. It is being developed by Vedanta Biosciences as a key component of VE303, a defined bacterial consortium for the prevention of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI). E. bolteae contributes to the therapeutic effect through colonization resistance, which involves competing with C. difficile for limited nutrients and producing metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that inhibit the growth and toxin production of the pathogen. Additionally, members of Clostridia cluster XIVa are known to induce the expansion of regulatory T cells (Tregs) in the gut, potentially modulating local inflammation and supporting intestinal homeostasis. VE303, which includes E. bolteae as one of its eight constituent strains, has demonstrated efficacy in Phase 2 clinical trials and is advancing into Phase 3 development.
