Overview

Enterococcus hirae is a bacterial species that has been investigated for various biological roles, including its presence in gut microbiota, its involvement in food fermentation, and its potential as a probiotic or autoprobiotic. As an autoprobiotic, it has been studied for its effects on serum and urine metabolomes in patients with metabolic syndrome, suggesting a role in correcting metabolic imbalances. Certain strains of E. hirae, such as BNT6, produce bacteriocins (e.g., Enterocin BNT6) with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Additionally, exopolysaccharides (EPS) derived from E. hirae, like glucan EPS from strain OL616073, have demonstrated prebiotic potential by resisting gastrointestinal digestion, stimulating probiotic growth, and modulating gut microbiota. The bacterium is also used as a test organism in evaluating the efficacy of disinfectants and has been identified as a reservoir for antimicrobial resistance genes in various animal populations. Its ability to degrade azo dyes has also been noted.
