Overview

This bivalent inactivated vaccine is developed by the Institute of Medical Biology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (IMBCAMS) to prevent hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). It targets the two primary causative agents of HFMD: enterovirus 71 (EV71) and coxsackievirus A16 (CA16). The vaccine is produced using the KMB17 human embryonic lung diploid fibroblast cell line and contains inactivated whole viruses of the EV71 (FY-23 strain) and CA16 (KM/M08 strain). By inducing neutralizing antibodies against the surface proteins of both viral serotypes, the vaccine aims to provide broad protection against HFMD-related neurological complications and systemic illness. It has demonstrated safety and immunogenicity in preclinical models and is currently undergoing Phase 1 clinical evaluation in healthy subjects aged 6 months to 59 years.
