enterovirus type 71 vaccine

The enterovirus type 71 (EV71) vaccine is an inactivated, monovalent whole-virus vaccine designed to provide active immunization against hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by EV71 infection. Developed primarily by Chinese manufacturers including Sinovac Biotech, the Institute of Medical Biology at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (IMBCAMS), and China National Biotec Group (Vigoo/Vabio), the vaccine is produced by propagating the EV71 virus (typically the C4a genotype) in Vero cell cultures, followed by purification, formaldehyde inactivation, and adsorption to an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant. It works by stimulating the production of neutralizing antibodies that target the viral capsid, preventing the virus from entering host cells and replicating. Clinical trials in healthy infants and children have demonstrated that the vaccine is highly effective in preventing EV71-associated HFMD and severe neurological disease, leading to its approval and widespread use in China since 2015-2016.
