Overview

The enterovirus type 71 vaccine (inactivated) developed by Beijing Sinobioway Group is an inactivated whole-virus vaccine indicated for the active immunization of infants and children against hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV71). The vaccine is produced by cultivating the EV71 virus (typically the C4 genotype) in Vero cells, followed by inactivation with formaldehyde and adsorption onto an aluminum hydroxide adjuvant. By introducing inactivated viral particles, the vaccine stimulates the production of neutralizing antibodies that target the viral capsid, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells and subsequent replication. This vaccine is crucial in reducing the incidence of severe HFMD, which can manifest with life-threatening neurological and systemic complications such as aseptic meningitis and encephalitis. It is typically administered as a two-dose series via intramuscular injection.
