Overview

Enteryx is an injectable, biocompatible polymer composed of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), with tantalum as a radiopaque marker. It was developed as a minimally invasive endoscopic treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The procedure involves injecting the liquid polymer into the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), where it solidifies to form a soft, spongy permanent implant. This implant augments the LES, helping to prevent gastric acid reflux into the esophagus and thereby reducing GERD symptoms. Clinical studies demonstrated that Enteryx could significantly reduce or eliminate patients' need for proton pump inhibitors over one to two years. However, due to serious adverse events—including rare but severe complications such as abscess formation and fatal fistula—Enteryx was voluntarily recalled from the market[2][4][6][7][10].
