Overview

Env 2-3 is a recombinant HIV envelope protein (gp120) vaccine candidate developed as an immunostimulant for the prevention of HIV infection. It was initially developed by Novartis Pharma and Chiron Biocine. The vaccine is designed to elicit immune responses against the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120, aiming to stimulate both antibody and cellular immunity in HIV-seronegative individuals. Clinical studies have shown that Env 2-3, when administered with the MF59 adjuvant (with or without MTP-PE), induces serum antibodies to various forms of gp120 and V3 peptide, neutralizing antibodies against homologous strains, fusion inhibition antibodies, lymphoproliferative responses, and transient CD4+ cytotoxic T cell activity. The addition of MTP-PE increased reactogenicity but did not enhance immunogenicity[1].
