enviomycin

Enviomycin is a cyclic basic peptide antibiotic related to viomycin and classified as a tuberactinomycin. It is isolated from an induced mutant of Streptomyces griseoverticillatus var. tuberacticus. Enviomycin acts as an antitubercular agent with less ototoxicity than other drugs in its class such as viomycin and capreomycin. Its primary use is for the treatment of tuberculosis, including pulmonary tuberculosis and infections caused by Mycobacterium avium complex[1][2][3][4][7]. The drug inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 70S ribosome of susceptible mycobacteria[6]. It has been approved for clinical use in Japan since 1975 but does not have approval in the US or Europe[7].
