Enzacamene is a small molecule organic camphor derivative used as a UV-B filter in sunscreens and cosmetic products to protect the skin from ultraviolet radiation. It is commonly known as 4-methylbenzylidene-camphor (4-MBC). Enzacamene absorbs UV-B rays and dissipates photon energy primarily through cis-trans isomerization, though other photochemical processes also occur due to its low quantum yield for this reaction. It displays weak binding activity at mammalian estrogen receptors and may exert estrogen-like effects via nonclassical signaling mechanisms that do not involve gene regulation by the nuclear estrogen receptor. There are concerns about its potential as an endocrine disruptor, with some evidence suggesting it can affect reproductive hormone levels and possibly suppress the pituitary-thyroid axis in animal studies. Enzacamene is approved for use in Canada but not permitted in the United States or Japan[1][3][4][6].
