Overview

Enzymatically modified isoquercitrin (EMIQ) is a **water-soluble quercetin derivative** produced through enzymatic modification of rutin. It consists of a mixture of isoquercitrin (quercetin 3-O-glucoside) and its alpha-oligoglucosides, with 1-10 alpha-glucose moieties connected linearly via 1→4 linkage. The average molecular weight is approximately 800 Daltons, with IQ-IQG7 comprising over 94% of the mixture and free quercetin present at less than 1%[1]. EMIQ demonstrates **significantly enhanced bioavailability** compared to natural dietary flavonoids - approximately **17-times higher than quercetin, 3-times higher than isoquercitrin, and 44-times higher than rutin** in animal studies[1]. The oligoglycoside modification increases hydrophilicity and water solubility, allowing EMIQ to dissolve easily in gastrointestinal fluids and be readily digested at intestinal mucosa membranes to yield quercetin for absorption[1]. The compound functions primarily as a **pro-quercetin**, being converted to quercetin and its metabolites (quercetin glucuronide, quercetin sulphate, and isorhamnetin glucuronide) after oral administration. In humans, maximal plasma concentration is achieved after 1.5-2 hours[1].
