Overview

Enzyme-treated Ecklonia cava extract (EEc) is a phlorotannin-rich natural product derived from the brown seaweed *Ecklonia cava* through enzymatic processing with pectinase (Rapidase X-Press L) and cellulase (Rohament CL). This specific extraction method enhances the concentration of bioactive phlorotannins, including eckol, dieckol, and phlorofucofuroeckol-A, with dieckol being the most prominent constituent. EEc has been investigated in preclinical research for its anti-obesity and anti-adipogenic properties. It functions by modulating key transcription factors and signaling pathways involved in lipid metabolism, such as downregulating CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein alpha (C/EBPα), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), and sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c). Additionally, it activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and increases the expression of adiponectin and glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4), leading to reduced body weight and improved serum lipid profiles in animal models of high-fat diet-induced obesity.
