Overview

EO1404 is an investigational cell therapy developed by Emmecell for the treatment of corneal edema associated with conditions like Fuchs' endothelial dystrophy and pseudophakic bullous keratopathy. The therapy is part of a platform called Magnetic Cell Replacement Therapy (M-CRT), which involves human corneal endothelial cells (HCECs) that have been loaded with superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles. During the procedure, these magnetic cells are injected into the eye's anterior chamber. An external magnetic patch is then placed over the patient's eye for a short period to guide and localize the cells, promoting their adherence to the posterior surface of the cornea (Descemet's membrane). This process aims to restore a functional endothelial layer, which is responsible for maintaining corneal hydration and clarity, potentially providing a less invasive alternative to traditional corneal transplant surgery.
