Overview

Eosin is a fluorescent red dye, chemically classified as a brominated derivative of fluorescein, that is widely utilized both as a diagnostic histological stain and as a topical therapeutic agent. In clinical dermatology, aqueous eosin (typically at a 2% concentration) is employed for its astringent and drying properties to treat exudative (weeping) skin conditions, including diaper dermatitis (diaper rash), intertrigo, and certain forms of psoriasis. It functions by non-specifically precipitating surface proteins to dry lesions and provides a mild antiseptic effect that helps prevent secondary bacterial or fungal infections. While it has a long history of use in various pharmaceutical and cosmetic formulations, some modern products, such as those developed by Cooperation Pharmaceutique Francaise, are regulated as medical devices under the European Medical Device Regulation (MDR).
