Overview

EP-2104R is a fibrin-specific gadolinium-based magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent developed for the detection and visualization of blood clots (thrombi). It consists of an 11-amino acid peptide derivatized with four gadolinium chelates, which enables high relaxivity and strong signal enhancement in MRI. The agent binds specifically to fibrin, a protein present in all thrombi, allowing for targeted imaging of acute coronary, cardiac, pulmonary, and venous thrombi. EP-2104R demonstrates high specificity for fibrin over other plasma proteins such as fibrinogen and serum albumin. It was developed by EPIX Pharmaceuticals as the first targeted high-resolution technique designed to directly visualize blood clots using molecular MRI[1][2][3][5].
