Drug intelligence / Profile preview
EP-3533 is a gadolinium-free, manganese-based MRI contrast agent specifically designed for the non-invasive detection and quantification of tissue fibrosis. Developed by Collagen Medical, the agent consists of a manganese(II) chelate conjugated to a peptide that exhibits high affinity for Type I collagen, a hallmark protein of fibrotic expansion in the extracellular matrix. By selectively accumulating in collagen-rich areas, EP-3533 enables high-resolution visualization of fibrotic progression in organs such as the liver, heart, and lungs. This targeted approach offers a potential alternative to invasive biopsies and addresses safety concerns associated with gadolinium-based contrast agents, particularly for patients with renal impairment who are at risk for nephrogenic systemic fibrosis.
