Overview

EP37 is a small molecule synthetic analog of (-)-epicatechin, a naturally occurring flavanol, developed by Epirium Bio for the treatment of neuromuscular and mitochondrial diseases. It functions as a mitochondrial biogenesis stimulator by mimicking the physiological signals of exercise. The mechanism of action involves the activation of the Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway and the induction of Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1alpha), which collectively promote mitochondrial proliferation, improve cristae structure, and enhance oxidative phosphorylation. EP37 has been primarily investigated in clinical trials for Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD) and Friedreich's Ataxia, aiming to restore muscle function and mitigate the progressive muscle wasting associated with these conditions.
