Overview

EP8000 is a synthetic flavanol analog developed by Epirium Bio (formerly Cardero Therapeutics) for the treatment of neuromuscular and mitochondrial diseases. It is designed to mimic and enhance the biological activity of (-)-epicatechin, a naturally occurring compound known to stimulate mitochondrial biogenesis and increase levels of follistatin. By inducing follistatin expression, EP8000 indirectly inhibits the myostatin pathway, which normally acts to limit muscle growth, thereby promoting muscle regeneration and increasing muscle mass. The drug's primary clinical focus has been on Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD), where it aims to address both the progressive loss of muscle tissue and the underlying mitochondrial dysfunction that contributes to disease pathology. EP8000 is intended to restore metabolic health and myogenic signaling in patients with muscle-wasting conditions.
