Drug intelligence / Profile preview
EPA + DHA phospholipids is a combination of the omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) esterified to a phospholipid backbone, rather than as triglycerides or ethyl esters. This form is found naturally in certain marine sources such as krill oil. Phospholipid-bound EPA and DHA are critical components of cell membranes, especially in the brain and retina, where they influence membrane fluidity, lipid raft formation, signal transduction pathways, and cellular function[5][9]. The mechanism of action includes anti-inflammatory effects through modulation of eicosanoid production (such as resolvins), reduction of plasma triglyceride levels by acting as poor substrates for enzymes involved in triglyceride synthesis, inhibition of platelet aggregation, prolongation of bleeding time, reduction in plasma fibrinogen levels[6][3], and support for cardiovascular health. Phospholipid forms may have superior bioavailability for brain uptake compared to other forms[7][9]. Primary indications include dietary supplementation for cardiovascular risk reduction (notably hypertriglyceridemia), cognitive support/brain health (including potential roles in dementia/Alzheimer’s disease), mood disorders such as depression or ADHD support[1][8][9], with ongoing research into additional benefits.
