Overview

Epaxal Junior is a pediatric virosomal vaccine developed for the prevention of hepatitis A infection in children and adolescents aged 1 to 16 years. Originally developed by Berna Biotech (later Crucell, now part of Janssen), it features a unique aluminum-free adjuvant system. The vaccine consists of formalin-inactivated hepatitis A virus (strain RG-SB) adsorbed onto the surface of virosomes, which are synthetic liposomes composed of phospholipids (lecithin and cephalin) and influenza virus envelope proteins. This virosomal delivery system mimics the natural process of viral infection to enhance immunogenicity without the need for traditional aluminum salts. It is administered as a 0.25 mL intramuscular injection, providing a smaller dose than the adult formulation while maintaining high seroprotection rates.
