Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ephedra alata extract is a botanical extract derived from the aerial parts, leaves, or fruits of the perennial shrub *Ephedra alata* (commonly known as winged ephedra or alanda), which is native to arid regions of North Africa and the Middle East. The extract contains a variety of bioactive phytochemicals, including ephedrine-type alkaloids (such as pseudoephedrine and ephedrine), flavonoids (such as kaempferol and quercetin), and phenolic acids. It has been traditionally used in folk medicine for respiratory, circulatory, and digestive disorders. In preclinical research, Ephedra alata extract has demonstrated anti-fibrotic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Specifically, it has been shown to protect against bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis in rats by attenuating oxidative stress, inhibiting profibrotic TGF-β1 signaling, and modulating the gut microbiota via the gut-lung axis.
