Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Ephedrae herba is the dried stem of plants from the Ephedra genus (notably Ephedra sinica), used for thousands of years in traditional Chinese medicine. Its primary active constituents are alkaloids such as ephedrine and pseudoephedrine. These compounds act as non-selective sympathomimetic agents with both alpha- and beta-adrenergic activity. They stimulate the central nervous system (CNS), increase heart rate and blood pressure, relax bronchial smooth muscle (bronchodilation), and constrict peripheral blood vessels (decongestant effect). Traditionally used to treat asthma, colds, nasal congestion, coughs, fever/chills from flu or allergies; it also has diuretic and anti-inflammatory effects. However, due to significant cardiovascular risks—including arrhythmias, hypertension, stroke—and CNS side effects like insomnia or seizures at higher doses or misuse/overdose levels—ephedra-containing dietary supplements are banned in many countries including the US[2][3][4][5][7]. The herb contains over 280 identified chemical constituents including alkaloids (mainly in stems), flavonoids/tannins/polysaccharides/volatile oils/organic acids[3]. It is not recommended for weight loss or athletic performance due to safety concerns.
