Overview

**Ephedrine** is a mixed-acting sympathomimetic small molecule evaluated by Pennington Biomedical Research Center in a Phase 2 obesity study, where it was administered with caffeine and studied alone and in combination with pioglitazone. It increases sympathetic adrenergic signaling through direct adrenergic receptor agonism and indirect promotion of norepinephrine release, increasing thermogenesis, energy expenditure, lipolysis, and cardiovascular stimulation. In the obesity trial context, ephedrine plus caffeine was intended to induce uncoupling protein 1 expression and promote weight and fat loss.
