Overview

Ephedrine levulinate is a small molecule alkaloid and a salt form of ephedrine, used experimentally as a stimulant in products to treat rhinitis or infections of the sinus, mouth, or throat. Its pharmacological effects are primarily due to its action as an agonist at alpha- and beta-adrenergic receptors and by indirectly causing the release of norepinephrine from sympathetic neurons. This results in increased stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system, leading to vasoconstriction, bronchodilation, increased heart rate and cardiac output, and central nervous system stimulation. Ephedrine derivatives have been used for their decongestant properties as well as for treating hypotension during anesthesia[1][2][3].
