Ephrin-A1 is a glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored cell surface protein that serves as a high-affinity ligand for the EphA2 receptor tyrosine kinase. In the context of oncology research, particularly for malignant mesothelioma (MM), recombinant ephrin-A1 is investigated for its ability to activate EphA2 signaling. This activation has been shown to induce the expression of microRNA-302b (miR-302b), which subsequently represses the anti-apoptotic gene Mcl-1. By downregulating Mcl-1, ephrin-A1 suppresses tumor cell proliferation and growth, suggesting its potential as a targeted therapeutic agent for cancers characterized by EphA2 overexpression.
