Drug intelligence / Profile preview
EPI-CBD-001 is a pharmaceutical-grade cannabidiol (CBD) formulation developed by EmpowerPharm for the treatment of Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). The drug utilizes a proprietary Self-Nanoemulsifying Drug Delivery System (SNEDDS) to enhance the oral bioavailability of CBD, which is typically low and variable due to extensive first-pass metabolism. CBD acts as an agonist at the 5-HT1A (serotonin) receptors, a mechanism believed to underlie its anxiolytic properties. EmpowerPharm completed a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT05600114) in late 2023, which evaluated the efficacy and safety of 300mg and 600mg daily doses in 239 patients with moderate to severe SAD. Despite the completion of the trial and favorable safety profiles, reports indicate that EmpowerPharm ceased operations in 2024.
