Overview

Epi-cyclohexanehexol, also known as epi-inositol, is a small molecule cyclohexane polyalcohol and a stereoisomer of inositol. It has been investigated as a therapeutic agent for Alzheimer's disease and other disorders involving protein aggregation. The compound works by binding to and stabilizing non-toxic forms of the amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptide, thereby inhibiting its aggregation into high-molecular-weight oligomers and fibrils that are associated with neurotoxicity. In preclinical studies using transgenic mouse models (such as TgCRND8), oral administration of epi-cyclohexanehexol was shown to reduce cerebral amyloid pathology, improve cognitive function, and increase survival rates. It is part of a class of inositol stereoisomers, including scyllo-inositol, that have been explored for their neuroprotective properties.
