EPIC2016-MSC003 is an investigational autologous, bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) therapy developed by Emory University. The product is manufactured and expanded ex vivo at the Emory Personalized Immunotherapy Center (EPIC) using a specialized medium containing human platelet lysate. Designed for use in patients with severe sickle cell disease (SCD) undergoing haploidentical hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), the therapy aims to leverage the potent immunomodulatory properties of MSCs to facilitate donor cell engraftment. By modulating recipient T-cell immune responses and secreting anti-inflammatory cytokines, EPIC2016-MSC003 is intended to create a more permissive environment for the transplant, thereby reducing the risk of graft failure and the incidence or severity of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).
