Overview

Epicatechin-3-gallate (also known as epicatechin gallate or ECG) is a polyphenolic catechin abundant in green tea (*Camellia sinensis*). It is structurally similar to epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and exhibits potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antineoplastic properties. ECG acts as a free radical scavenger and modulates various cellular signaling pathways, including the inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9), aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), and glucose transporters (GLUT1 and GLUT5). Preclinical studies have investigated its potential in chemoprevention, cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, and as an antibacterial adjuvant against methicillin-resistant *Staphylococcus aureus* (MRSA).
