Overview

Epicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class. It acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, specifically targeting the transpeptidase enzyme (a type of penicillin-binding protein) involved in cross-linking peptidoglycan strands during cell wall biosynthesis. This inhibition weakens the bacterial cell wall, leading to osmotic instability and eventual lysis of susceptible bacteria. Epicillin is structurally related to ampicillin and was developed for use against a range of gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria. Like other penicillins, it is bactericidal in action.
