Overview

Epicriptine is a small molecule nootropic and peptide ergot alkaloid of the ergoline class, also known as beta-dihydroergocryptine. It constitutes one third of the mixture known as dihydroergocryptine, with the other two thirds being alpha-dihydroergocryptine. The primary clinical use for epicriptine is in individuals over sixty who manifest signs and symptoms of an idiopathic decline in mental capacity, such as cognitive impairment. Its mechanism of action is mainly due to agonistic activity on dopamine receptors, contributing to its effects on cognition and mood. Epicriptine is a component of ergoloid mesylate preparations that have been used for symptomatic relief in age-related cognitive decline[1][2][3][5].
