Overview

Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a naturally occurring protein that binds to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a transmembrane tyrosine kinase receptor. EGF stimulates cell proliferation, differentiation, and survival by activating EGFR-mediated signaling pathways such as MAPK, Akt, and JNK. The binding of EGF to EGFR leads to receptor dimerization and autophosphorylation of intracellular tyrosine residues, triggering downstream signal transduction cascades involved in DNA synthesis and cell proliferation. While not itself a pharmaceutical drug, recombinant forms of EGF have been explored for wound healing and tissue regeneration due to their ability to promote epithelial cell growth[6]. Overactivation or dysregulation of the EGFR pathway is implicated in various cancers.
