This is a combination regimen used primarily for transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) or transarterial infusion chemotherapy in the treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The regimen consists of: - **Epirubicin (also known as epidoxorubicin):** an anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II, leading to cytotoxicity. - **Cisplatin:** a platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent that forms DNA crosslinks and induces apoptosis. - **Lipiodol:** an iodized oil used as a drug carrier; it enhances the retention of chemotherapeutic agents within liver tumors when administered intra-arterially. In this combination, epirubicin and cisplatin are emulsified or suspended in lipiodol. Lipiodol acts as a vehicle to deliver high concentrations of these cytotoxic drugs directly to liver tumors via hepatic artery infusion. This approach increases local drug exposure while reducing systemic toxicity. The primary indication is unresectable HCC, but similar regimens have been explored for other solid tumors treated by regional chemotherapy[2][4][5].
