Overview

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a polyphenolic compound classified as a catechin, most abundantly found in green tea leaves. It acts as a potent antioxidant, protecting cells from free radical damage and oxidative stress. EGCG has been studied for its potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory effects, weight loss support, cardiovascular protection (such as lowering blood pressure), neuroprotection, and possible antineoplastic (anticancer) activity. Mechanistically, EGCG can inhibit cellular oxidation processes and modulate various molecular targets involved in inflammation and cell survival pathways. It also inhibits the aggregation of amyloid proteins implicated in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease by remodeling mature amyloid fibrils into non-toxic aggregates[1][2][5][8][9].
