Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Epilobium angustifolium extract is a botanical preparation derived from the plant Epilobium angustifolium (fireweed), widely used in traditional and herbal medicine. It contains polyphenols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids, and exhibits a range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, and wound healing effects. Traditionally, it has been utilized for treating gastrointestinal disorders such as ulcers, colitis, and diarrhea, as well as for urinary diseases (including benign prostatic hyperplasia), skin diseases (such as eczema, acne, burns, and rashes), and as a topical agent for inflammation and infections. Mechanistically, its biological effects are attributed to the inhibition of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes, suppression of prostaglandin biosynthesis, free radical scavenging, and direct antimicrobial activities. Current scientific literature has evaluated the extract in vitro and in animal models, and there is growing interest in its application as a component of dermatological and cosmetic preparations for anti-aging and anti-inflammatory purposes[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8].
