Overview

Epimestrol is a synthetic, steroidal estrogen and an estrogen ether that acts as a prodrug of 17-epiestriol. It is classified as a weak estrogen and has been used primarily in the treatment of female infertility due to anovulation and amenorrhea, often as part of ovulation induction protocols in combination with gonadotropin-releasing hormone. Epimestrol exerts its effects by modulating the secretion of gonadotropins (LH, FSH) and prolactin at the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, leading to increased levels of these hormones during therapy. Its mechanism involves activation of estrogen receptors after conversion to its active form[1][4][6][7].
