epirubicin

Epirubicin is an anthracycline antineoplastic agent primarily used as chemotherapy for breast cancer, especially in patients who have undergone surgery to remove the tumor. It is also used in the treatment of other cancers such as bladder cancer. Epirubicin works by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting topoisomerase II, which prevents DNA replication and transcription, leading to cell death. It can also generate cytotoxic free radicals that damage cellular components. The drug exhibits activity throughout the cell cycle but is most effective during the S and G2 phases. Epirubicin may be administered intravenously or directly into the bladder (intravesical) for certain indications[1][2][3][4][5][7].
