Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Liposomal epirubicin is an anthracycline chemotherapy agent encapsulated within liposomes. It functions primarily by intercalating between DNA base pairs and inhibiting the enzyme topoisomerase II, which prevents DNA replication and transcription, ultimately leading to cell death. The liposomal formulation is intended to improve the therapeutic index of epirubicin by enhancing drug delivery to tumor sites via the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect while minimizing exposure to healthy tissues, thereby reducing the risk of cardiotoxicity and other systemic side effects. It is distributed by Salud Pharma for the treatment of breast cancer and other oncology indications where anthracyclines are standard of care.
