Overview

Epirubicinol is a major active metabolite of epirubicin (an anthracycline chemotherapy agent); epirubicinol is formed in vivo by the reduction of the carbonyl group at the 13-position of epirubicin. Epirubicinol may contribute to the overall pharmacological and toxic effects of epirubicin. The mechanism of action for epirubicinol is presumed to be similar to epirubicin, which includes DNA intercalation, inhibition of topoisomerase II, generation of free radicals, and disruption of nucleic acid and protein synthesis in rapidly dividing cells. Epirubicin and its metabolites are used as cytotoxic agents mainly for the treatment of several cancers, notably breast and bladder cancer.
