Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Episcleral Celecoxib is an investigational, sustained-release formulation of the selective cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitor celecoxib, developed by Targeted Therapy Technologies, LLC. It is designed as a sequestered transscleral, controlled-release episcleral exoplant (reservoir) that delivers the drug through transscleral diffusion to the retina and choroid. This delivery method is intended to provide long-term therapeutic drug levels to the posterior pole of the eye while being less invasive than repeated intraocular injections. The formulation is primarily being evaluated for the treatment of macular edema and other inflammatory or neovascular disorders of the retina, choroid, and vitreous. Preclinical studies have shown that this delivery method significantly inhibits retinal and choroidal neovascularization by reducing vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and vascular leakage.
