Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Episcleral Dexamethasone is an investigational sustained-release formulation of the glucocorticoid dexamethasone, developed by Targeted Therapy Technologies (also known as 3T Ophthalmics). The drug is delivered via a proprietary sequestered transscleral, controlled-release episcleral reservoir system, which is surgically placed to provide continuous delivery of the steroid to the posterior segment of the eye. This delivery method aims to provide a safer and more convenient alternative to frequent intravitreal injections, potentially reducing risks such as endophthalmitis, retinal hemorrhage, and intraocular pressure spikes. Dexamethasone acts as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, exerting potent anti-inflammatory effects that reduce vascular permeability and retinal edema. The product is currently in Phase 1 clinical trials for the treatment of refractory diabetic macular edema and other inflammatory disorders of the posterior pole.
