Overview

The Epizootic Bovine Abortion Vaccine (EBAV) is a live-attenuated veterinary vaccine developed by Hygieia Biological Laboratories in collaboration with researchers at the University of California, Davis. It is specifically designed to prevent Epizootic Bovine Abortion (EBA), commonly known as Foothill Abortion, a significant cause of reproductive loss in beef cattle in the intermountain West of the United States. The disease is caused by the bacterium *Pajaroellobacter abortivus*, which is transmitted to cattle by the Pajaroello tick (*Ornithodoros coriaceus*). The vaccine contains a live, weakened form of the *Pajaroellobacter abortivus* agent and is administered to heifers at least 60 days prior to breeding to allow for the development of a protective immune response, thereby preventing late-term fetal loss and abortion during pregnancy.
