Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Epoetin Alfa BS is a biosimilar version of epoetin alfa, a recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) developed and marketed by Takeda in collaboration with JCR Pharmaceuticals. As an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA), it mimics the biological activity of endogenous erythropoietin by binding to and activating the erythropoietin receptor on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. This activation stimulates the proliferation, differentiation, and maturation of red blood cells, thereby increasing hemoglobin levels. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). In clinical trial contexts, epoetin alfa often serves as the standard-of-care comparator in studies evaluating the transition of patients to longer-acting agents, such as peginesatide.
