Overview
Epoetin alfa Megalabs is a biosimilar recombinant human erythropoietin (epoetin alfa) developed by Megalabs for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). As an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA), it functions by binding to and activating the erythropoietin receptor on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow. This activation triggers intracellular signaling pathways that promote the proliferation, maturation, and survival of red blood cells, thereby increasing hemoglobin levels and alleviating symptoms of anemia. It is specifically being evaluated for intravenous administration in patients with Stage V CKD who are dependent on hemodialysis, aiming to demonstrate therapeutic equivalence to reference products like Epogen.
