Epoetin alfa and epoetin beta are recombinant forms of human erythropoietin (rHuEPO), a glycoprotein hormone that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. These agents are classified as erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) and are used primarily to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), chemotherapy-induced anemia in cancer patients, and anemia related to zidovudine treatment in HIV-infected individuals. They may also be used perioperatively to reduce the need for allogeneic blood transfusions in certain surgical patients. Epoetins act by binding to the erythropoietin receptor on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, promoting their survival and differentiation into mature red blood cells[1][2][3][5]. Both drugs have similar mechanisms of action but differ slightly in their molecular structure and pharmacokinetics.
