Overview
Epostim is a biosimilar version of epoetin alfa, a recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO). It was developed by GeneMedix (later Reliance GeneMedix) as an erythropoietin receptor agonist to stimulate erythropoiesis (red blood cell production). The drug was primarily investigated for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD), particularly in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis. Epostim was designed to be highly similar to the reference biologic Eprex (Janssen). Although it reached Phase 2 clinical trials, including a multicenter study in Lithuania, the marketing authorization application (MAA) submitted to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) was eventually withdrawn by the sponsor.
