Drug intelligence / Profile preview
EPP-AF is a mucoadhesive gel formulation containing a standardized extract of propolis, a resinous substance produced by honeybees. It is being developed by the University of São Paulo (specifically the Faculdade de Ciências Farmacêuticas de Ribeirão Preto and Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Preto) in partnership with Apis Flora for the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis. The formulation utilizes mucoadhesive polymers, such as carbopol or chitosan, to ensure prolonged contact with the vaginal mucosa and improve therapeutic delivery. Propolis provides antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, and preclinical data suggests EPP-AF has antifungal activity comparable to clotrimazole against *Candida albicans* across its various morphotypes, including yeast, pseudohyphae, and hyphae. It has been evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials to assess safety and efficacy compared to standard antifungal treatments.
