Overview

Eprazinone is a piperazine-derived small molecule primarily used as an antitussive, mucolytic, and bronchospasmolytic agent for treating respiratory conditions like acute and chronic bronchitis. It works by increasing the volume of respiratory tract fluid and interacting with polyanionic bronchial mucins to modify their fibrillar structure and reduce mucus viscosity. Additionally, eprazinone has been shown to increase lung surfactant phospholipid levels and inhibit chloride secretion in the airway epithelium. Recent studies have also identified it as a ligand for neurokinin receptors (NKRs), which may contribute to its pharmacological profile. It has been marketed under brand names such as Eftapan and Mucitux, though its use has been associated with side effects like convulsions in children and specific drug eruptions.
