Overview

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) dendritic cell vaccine developed by Shenzhen People's Hospital is an autologous cell-based immunotherapy designed to treat nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), a malignancy strongly associated with EBV infection. The vaccine is produced by isolating a patient's peripheral blood mononuclear cells, differentiating them into dendritic cells (DCs), and loading them with EBV-specific antigens, such as Latent Membrane Protein 1 (LMP1) and Latent Membrane Protein 2 (LMP2). Once re-administered to the patient via intranodal injection, these matured and pulsed DCs present the viral antigens to the immune system, specifically activating EBV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) to recognize and eliminate tumor cells expressing these viral proteins. This approach aims to overcome the immune evasion typically seen in EBV-associated tumors by providing a potent stimulus for a targeted cellular immune response.
